In Nepal it is up to parents to provide for the care, including treatment, of children with muscular dystrophy and this is very difficult for most parents. they are faced with trying to do everything , including caring for their children daily and working for the income needed to this and support their muscles are getting weaker so their parents need good jobs.
To help these families, we have set up the Nepal Muscular Dystrophy Child Care Society of which I am the founder president. Its aim is to help children with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy.
Present services the society aims to provide are:
1. Regular physiotherapy at the DMD day care center in Bhaktapur and a home-based service for boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
2. Support for gene testing.
3. Supplementary medicine, physical equipment and physiotherapy that help maintain boy’s strength.
4. Access to computer skills programs, arts and games.
5. Vocational training for members of families affected by DMD and breckers.
The society has also aims to increase awareness of muscular dystrophy and to improve parent’s knowledge by publishing a magazine and encouraging interaction between parents.
we are running our society with difficulty because we have no donor organization and we are dependent on our own labors.
Our main source of funds is monthly donations from parents, relatives, friends and some local institutions and from a parents income generation program we have set up, the Muscular Dystrophy Child Care Health program.
This program produces Nepali handmade paper goods, notebooks, greeting cards, photo frames ,photo albums, telephone diaries and similar goods and the proceeds help fund the DMD day care centre and home -based service the society is running.
we would like useful information about income-generating activities and would also welcome support running our activities. Perhaps people could, for example, help us market our paper goods. We have been able to sell some products but we still need more buyers to cover our expenses.
Volunteers that could help here in Nepal and visitors are always very welcome. Our DMD daycare centre and workshop until in Bhaktapur, Nepal is few minutes from Darbar Square. Thank you and best regards,
